Views Through Time A Driving Tour of Rutland County, Vt.
by Jack Glade
Looking for some background information on the sights and places you see as you drive around the southern Vermont region enjoying the autumn scenery?
The Rutland Area Cultural Alliance, in collaboration with the University of Vermont Historic Preservation Program, has provided a perfect tour guide: Views Through Time: Driving Through the Rutland Region.
A successor to a similar guidebook for a walking tour of historic downtown Rutland, Vt., this Views Through Time booklet outlines a car tour that begins in Rutland at the Visitor's Center in Main Street Park.
From the park the tour proceeds over approximately 55 miles of scenic county roadway, highlighting historic and significant buildings along the way, and looping back to the park.
Included in the tour are, in tour order, the towns of Clarendon Springs, Ira, Tinmouth, Middletown Springs, East Poultney, Poultney Village, Fair Haven, Hydeville, Castleton, West Rutland and Proctor.
The goal of the tour, according to the guidebook, is to help people look around and understand how, over time, the places we see today were shaped.
The complete tour is estimated to take about three hours, depending on whether stops are made. As long as you're on the road you may as well take the opportunity to stop and enjoy the individual towns, and perhaps leave the car for a closer view of some of the tour sites. But be advised, as the booklet points out, Many of the points of interest in this tour are private residences...Please respect the owner's right to privacy.
Researched and written by graduate students in the University of Vermont Historic Preservation Program, the guidebook does an excellent job of describing the historical significance of selected homes and buildings and also pointing out special architectural features of interest.
This Views Through Time guidebook for the driving tour, as well as the earlier guidebook for the walking tour of downtown Rutland, are available for $1.90 each at the Rutland Visitor's Center at Main Street Park in Rutland as well as at the Book King bookstore in downtown Rutland and other locations throughout the region.
For more information or the name of a local place to obtain a guidebook, call the Rutland Area Cultural Alliance at (802) 747-3590.
