Pre-Season Catch & Release

Trout Fishing on
Certain Vermont Streams

Can't stand the wait till Opening Day? Bored with all the fishing shows on TV? For the first time ever, you can legally fish for trout prior to Opening Day on a catch-and-release basis with flies or lures on several Vermont river sections. A new regulation allows trout fishing on certain stream areas during the early spring as long as you use artificial flies or lures and you immediately release any trout you catch where you catch them.

Vermont's normal Opening Day for trout fishing is April 11 this year. The river sections open under the new regulation are:

LAMOILLE RIVER - CVPS Dam at Fairfax Falls, to the upstream side of the Georgia High Bridge in Georgia.

OTTER CREEK - Center Rutland Falls to the Lake Champlain Boundary (the falls at Vergennes).

WINOOSKI RIVER - Bolton Dam to the Lake Champlain Boundary (ledges west of Route 7, Winooski).

BLACK RIVER - Gould's Mill in Springfield to the Connecticut River Boundary (first bridge upstream from Connecticut River).

OMPOMPANOOSUC RIVER - Union Village Dam to the Connecticut River Boundary (first bridge upstream from Connecticut River).

WEST RIVER - Townshend Dam in Townshend to the Connecticut River Boundary (first bridge upstream from Connecticut River).

WHITE RIVER - Rte. 107 bridge in Bethel to the Connecticut River Boundary (first bridge upstream from Connecticut River).

WILLIAMS RIVER - Lower end of Brockway Mills Falls in Rockingham to Connecticut River Boundary (first bridge upstream from Connecticut River).

LEWIS CREEK - Town Highway #3 (State Prison Hollow Road) bridge in Starksboro to the Lake Champlain Boundary (North Ferrisburgh Falls).
