Spring Derbies Hook Kids on Fishing

Here's a great opportunity for young people to give fishing a try. The Vermont Fish & Wildlife Department has released a list of upcoming fishing events, most of them intended just for kids.

The Department has two programs designed to help young people learn about fishing: Kids' Brooks, and Let's Go Fishing.

The Kids' Brooks program provides an opportunity for kids to fish in a well-stocked pond or stream.

Let's Go Fishing teaches fishing techniques, tackle craft, ethics, and aquatic ecology and management.

For over three decades, the state has provided free fish to the children of the state through the Kids' Brooks program. The program originally provided fish for derbies or posted kids' brooks (sections of streams posted for fishing only by children under license age). Now, some of the sponsored events include senior citizens and handicapped persons.

Organizers of these events are typically charitable, community, or non-profit groups, such as fire departments, fish and game clubs, Rotary, Lions, town recreation committees, 4-H clubs, and scouts.

This year, 75 groups are involved with an estimated 6,500 participants expected. Derbies provide children with the opportunity for a successful fishing experience, enabling them to become acquainted with angling skills, fishing ethics and aquatic habitat.

Most kids fishing derbies are open to the public, although they may be restricted to the town residents or to a particular group of individuals. From 150 to 300 fish are provided for each derby, depending on how many participants there were the previous year. Approximately 20,000 eight- to ten-inch brook trout are stocked annually for these events by the Vermont Fish & Wildlife Department.

Kids' fishing derbies started in late April and run until mid June. Water temperatures become too warm to stock trout later in the season. For further information, contact Barb Johnston at Fish & Wildlife's Waterbury, Vt. office at (802) 241-3700.
